1. Tulum, Mexico
While Cancun and Playa del Carmen are famous for their all-inclusive resorts on the Riviera Maya, the Boho village of Tulum calls the boutique hotel lover. It also happens to have some of the most beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters on the Caribbean Coast. Tulum was once a haven for celebrities but has now become popular with the masses due to substantial Instagram coverage and its array of fantastic restaurants, nearby Mayan ruins, and boho-bougie vibe.
The Lay of the Land
Tulum is split into two parts. The Zona Hotelera, along the coast, features several small boutique hotels with seaside cabanas, fairly high-end amenities, and a walkable neighborhood with upscale shopping. The hotels in this area sit directly on the beach and have substantially higher prices than accommodations within the village. If you book months in advance, you could score a beachfront bungalow for around $1,000 for the week.
Alternatively, in the village, a massive amount of boutique hotels and Airbnb spots are available with private pools, large rooms, and stunning designs for as little as $30/night.
What to Do in Tulum
Tulum is very bikeable, and most hotels offer bike rentals for a few dollars. You can easily reach Playa Paraiso and the other public beaches by bike along a paved biking trail. So, if you decide to use the far cheaper accommodations in the village, you’re still just a bike ride away from some of the most stunning beaches in the world. As far as activities, how about riding your bike to the Tulum Mayan Ruins? Head out to Gran Cenote for a freshwater dip, enjoy a massage at one of the many parlors, or eat your weight in street tacos and vegan-friendly finds. Visit the Instagram-worthy Ven a la Luz sculpture at Ahau Tulum Resort, or hang with the locals at Kaan Luum Lagoon. Whatever you decide to do in Tulum, let the laid-back vibe of the Mexican Riviera penetrate your soul and relax your bones!
Day Trips from Tulum
If you want to explore the Maya Riviera, head south to the Bay of 7 Colors in Bacalar. This stunning area has been called the Maldives of Mexico and features stunning bays of several shades of blue that you can explore via a boat tour or kayaking. You can also head north to the adorable beach town of Puerto Morelos for some snorkeling and access to the famous Ruta de Cenotes. If you want a more laid-back honeymoon without loads of partying tourists, Puerto Morelos is a great option and is overall more budget-friendly than Tulum. It just doesn’t have the same chic vibe. It’s more family-oriented but just as beautiful.
Hint: The beaches of Tulum are technically public. However, the setup is that many of the hotels block the path to the beach and charge visitors to access their beachside bars. You can access Playa Paraiso and walk along the beach to the other spots if you want, or you can pay a small fee to access the beach in a convenient spot. Thirdly, choose to have lunch at one of the beachside bars, and then spend the rest of your day in a free beach chair!
Warning: Tulum is immensely popular with tourists. If you want a secluded honeymoon, this isn’t it. Also, prices vary greatly in the city, not only on accommodation but on food as well. If you’re looking for cheap, stay in the village, eat in the village, and souvenir shop in the village.
2. Ksamil, Albania
While the coast of Southern Italy is the old man on the block and Croatia has become the new gem of the Adriatic, the hidden gem of the region is the coast of Albania! Albania is hands-down one of the most budget-friendly countries in Europe, and it’s stunning. With the foothills of the Alps, miles of Mediterranean beaches, and a plethora of interesting historic sites, this newcomer on the travel scene has a host of amenities to offer smart travelers.
The Lay of the Land
Ksamil lies in the southern region of Albania. It’s just a stone’s throw from the Greek Island of Corfu and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Albania as well as some of the only sandy ones (most are white pebble). Ksamil is just a 20-minute bus ride from the bustling beach town of Sarande, which is easy to visit for nightlife. There are three small islands in the bay for tourists to explore by kayak or boat tour, as well. Choose between several lovely guesthouses and small hotels along the coast. Highly rated hotels and even full apartments are available on Booking.com, just meters from the beach, for less than $300 for a full week.
What to Do in Ksamil
First of all, you should enjoy the beach, especially at sunset! Secondly, hop on the city bus, or take a long walk to Butrint National Park. This sprawling sight is the best archaeological park you’ve never heard of. Due to its strategic position, the area has been conquered by pretty much every major empire that held sway in the region. Within one park, you’ll explore an ancient Greek medical sanctuary and amphitheater, Roman bath complexes, Venetian towers, Ottoman castles, and a stunning landscape on top of it. Kayak, take a paddle boat, or swim out to the uninhabited islands in the bay, peruse the beachside cafes and restaurants, and take in the epic sunsets.
Day Trips from Ksamil
Aside from Butrint, you can easily take day trips to Corfu Island, the ancient historic city of Gjirokaster, several beautiful beaches up the coast, like Porto Palermo, Himare, and the hidden gem—Borsh. Borsh has a long stretch of white beaches, connected by goat paths, and makes for a wonderful day of beach hopping and adventuring. You’ll likely have a herd of goats for company, too. You can also visit the hilltop castle ruins and ancient mosques for an incredible mountain view. Borsh is one of those rare places in the world where the mountains tumble down right into the sea, and it’s a place of wild beaches and total rejuvenation!
3. Folegandros, Greece
There’s nothing more romantic than a glorious Greek Island. Santorini tops the list of all romantic getaways, and Mykonos is good for a party, but the little-known island of Folegandros has it all… on a budget! You’ll get the clifftop views of Santorini without all those people and soaring prices, and the Greek Islands are beautiful year-round!
The Lay of the Land
Folegandros is a small island in the Cyclades, positioned between Milos and Santorini. You’ll likely fly into Athens and take a ferry to one of the major island transport hubs, like Naxos. From there, you can hop on a ferry to Folegandros. It offers charming villages, sweeping sunset views, and a clifftop capital city. Chora is likely where you will want to stay. It’s the biggest village on the island and offers a plethora of small hotels and incredible views. Think paved, cobbled alleys, white traditional homes, blue shutters, and picturesque public squares. It’s got everything to fulfill your Greek Island dreams.
What to Do on Folegandros
Take some time to wander Chora town with your love. There’s a lifetime of treasures in the narrow streets. Walk down to Agali Beach for a swim in paradise, or take a boat trip for some snorkeling at mindblowing Katergo Beach. Look for brightly colored fish at the base of towering sea cliffs! You can take a scuba diving lesson with Sea U Dive Center, and enjoy a romantic dinner at Blue Cuisine. Take the whitewashed, switchback path to the Panagia Church for a panoramic view of the island. Finally, let out your wild side by popping into Galifos Beach for some nude swimming with your new spouse!
Day Trips From Folegandros
The fantastic Greek ferry system makes it very easy to take day trips to the Isle of Naxos, the otherworldly rocky beaches of Milos, or the famous caldera of Santorini. For more information on the Greek ferry system, check out our travel guide, “The Greatest Greek Island-Hopping Itinerary!”
4. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
A long-time favorite for cheap honeymoon destinations, the Dominican Republic specializes in adults-only beach resorts at low costs. It also helps that it has some seriously gorgeous beaches! It’s one of the most budget-friendly places in the world for an all-inclusive beach honeymoon.
Lay of the Land
One of the best aspects of a honeymoon in Punta Cana is the ease of everything. You can fly directly to the city on an international flight. Your resort will pick you up from the airport, and within minutes, you’re swimming up to the bar for one of those fancy umbrella drinks. It doesn’t get much easier than that. Punta Cana is on the eastern tip of the island, facing Puerto Rico.
What to Do in Punta Cana
Looking for things to do other than having frozen cocktails in seaside pools? Join the locals under the palm trees of Macao Beach. Visit the wonders of the natural amusement park, Scape Park, including the Hoyo Azul cenote! Or enjoy the open bar and slew of shows at Coco Bongo. Adventurous honeymooners can go windsurfing, parasailing, or snorkeling at Bavaro Beach, and everyone can gorge themselves on fresh seafood at the numerous seaside cafes.
Day Trips From Punta Cana
One of the best day trips from Punta Cana is the trip to the untouched Saona Island. The island is a protected nature reserve and is home to nesting sea turtles! Take a safari truck to the top of Montaña Redonda for a panoramic view of Playa Esmeralda from the cliffside hammocks and swings. Adventurous couples can also make the short, steep hike up the mountain. Speaking of Playa Esmeralda, this secluded and picturesque beach is the perfect place to snag some alone time near Punta Cana. Make sure to organize a trip to Salto de la Jalda, the tallest waterfall in the Caribbean!
5. Côn Đảo, Vietnam
While the flights are pretty pricey from the United States, upon arrival, Vietnam is one of the most budget-friendly countries in the world. It also offers an immersive cultural experience, some of the best food on the planet, and stunning landscapes.
Lay of the Land
Unlike the bustling cities, Côn Đảo is a relaxing place. It’s an archipelago of islands off the East Coast of mainland Vietnam. The islands were formerly a secluded place to torture the worst prisoners, but now, they are lush, forested white sand paradises. This is a great location for winter weddings, as the best time to visit is during the dry season from November to February. The main island of Con Son is reached by a short flight on Vietnam Airlines from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, or by a three-hour ferry from Vung Tau Port.
What to Do in Côn Đảo
Côn Đảo is a wonderful place for scuba diving! With clear waters, a healthy coral population, sufficient marine life, and a shipwreck, the diving here is top-notch! Spend a day on the bay of Bai Dat Doc on Con Son Island. While on the island, go trekking in Côn Đảo National Park. From the epic peak trail, you get panoramic views of the entire island. Then visit the old prisons on a guided tour for a look at French Colonial and Vietnam War history.
Day Trips From Côn Đảo
Since you’re on an island, day trips and excursions are done by boat. Boat tours are easily available to explore the lush, smaller island surrounding Con Son. We highly recommend taking one, as the surrounding islands are pristine and feature some of the best snorkeling. Just ask before you book a trip—some tours go to private islands, which have an extra visiting fee.
6. Nosara, Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a magical land of dense rainforest, towering waterfalls, and miles and miles of beaches of every flavor. It’s a bucket list destination for all kinds of travelers! While the whole country is a treasure to explore, the region near Nosara is the perfect honeymoon spot. This little town is loaded with chic yoga retreats, glorious beaches, whale-watching opportunities, and a laid-back but upscale vibe. The natural beauty of Nosara will blow your mind, and it’s the ideal place to rest after the craziness of your wedding week.
Lay of the Land
Located in the highly touristed Guanacaste region of the Pacific Coast, Nosara is south of the major tourist towns and has a different vibe. It’s in the center of the Nicoya Peninsula, and the town is actually not located on the beach but several miles back in the jungle. However, most of the accommodations are along Playa Nosara and Playa Pelada on the coast. The closest airport is in Liberia, but you might find cheaper flights into San Juan. Renting a car is easy and fairly affordable in Costa Rica and is the best way to get around. You can also take an in-country flight to the small Nosara airport once in the country. The roads near Nosara are notoriously bad! However, ATVs, scooters, golf carts, and local tuk-tuks make the journey an adventure.
What to Do in Nosara
This part of Costa Rica is popular with surfers and yogis. There are numerous yoga retreat centers around, and a good massage is never far away. Playa Guiones is a good spot to catch a wave or sunbathe on the vast beach. The sunsets are notoriously beautiful here, too! Visit Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary, Nosara Biological Reserve, or Ostional Wildlife Refuge to see the local animals. Watersports are a big deal here, so be sure to hit the waves with a surfing class—there are heaps of surfing schools in the area. Finally, take an ATV tour, or go horseback riding on the beach at sunset!
Day Trips From Nosara
Due to its more isolated nature, there aren’t many great day trips from Nosara. It’s pretty much surrounded by more surfing beaches, but you can certainly try out a few of them and see which one you love most!
7. Porto, Portugal
One of the cheapest countries in Western Europe and normally a well-priced flight from the United States, Portugal is the perfect honeymoon destination for city lovers. Its historic cities of Lisbon and Porto are charming, to say the least. Arguably the more beautiful of the two and the one we think is better for a honeymoon is the smaller northern city of Porto. It’s famous for its bridges, port wine, and riverside, stacked Old Town. While much of the historic waterfront could admittedly benefit from some restoration dollars, Porto is a charming place with gorgeous strolling paths, endless back alleys, and countless street musicians. The architecture is stunning. The vibe is cool and breezy, and the wine is delicious!
Lay of the Land
Porto lies on the Atlantic Ocean in Northern Portugal. Most international airports have a direct flight to Porto. However, you might check the prices on flights to Lisbon and then take the train to Porto. You’ll want to stay in the Ribeira or Baixa Districts for the most romantic vibes and easy access to the sites.
What to Do in Porto
Porto has enough amazing sites to keep you busy all week long. Visit the most beautiful bookstore in the world, Livraria Lello. Yes, a library/bookstore is one of the top things to do here, but it’s amazing! Marvel at the Porto Sao Bento Train Station. Take the Six-Bridge Porto Sightseeing Boat Tour by traditional rabelo boat. Wander the riverside neighborhoods on a walking tour, or hop on the traditional trams. Visit Bolhão Market. Take in the beauty of Ireja e Torre dos Clerigos, and climb the tower for a view of the city. Do a port wine tasting at the WOW exhibit or at the many historic port houses in the Gaia neighborhood. Catch the sunset from Jardim do Morro, and wander the old city with an ice cream!
Day Trips from Porto
If you would like to do an excursion from Porto, day trips to Douro Valley for proper port wine tasting are incredibly popular and easy to snag in the city.
8. Transylvania, Romania
Shrouded in ancient lore and mist, the dense forests and rolling mountains of Transylvania are a castle lover’s dream. It’s a magical land with an interesting story to tell, gorgeous and walkable cities, fantastic food, and great prices. If you’re looking for a honeymoon idea that’s off the beaten path, Romania is truly stunning!
Lay of the Land
There are a few wonderful cities you could choose from in the region. Sibiu is nice with a small historic core and a few small sites located in the hills surrounding it. Brasov is the main tourist city in the region. It’s walkable, has lovely traditional restaurants, a beautiful historic core, and an incredible viewpoint located within the city by a short hike. Sinai is also nice, located just outside the entrance to Peles Castle. It’s in the mountains and has a beautiful park, great architecture, and a ski town kind of vibe. You’ll likely fly into the capital of Bucharest, which is just a short jaunt away by public transit from any of these cities.
What to Do in Transylvania
Feed your inner vampire with a visit to Bran Castle. Visit one of the most gorgeous castles in the world—a true fairytale—Peles Castle. Tour Old Town Brasov. Rent a scooter in Sibiu, and take it out to the small towns surrounding the city. Splurge on calories instead of money with as many helpings of papanasi as you can get your hands on!
Day Trips From Transylvania
The capital of Bucharest is just a couple of hours away and is certainly worth a full day. Also, the nation’s tallest peak, Moldoveanu Peak, is a popular place for hiking and is accessible by a scenic drive from Brasov.
9. Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico
If you’re an adventurous couple, there’s no more romantic honeymoon destination than Baja California Sur. The stunning peninsula is one of the best places in the world for whale watching of several different species. It’s a top spot for swimming with whale sharks, and watersports lovers will be in heaven, as windsurfing is king here. While resort lovers flock to Cabo, for a little more local flavor, head for the romantic little city of Todos Santos. It’s long been an artist colony and boasts incredible cafes, lovely boutique hotels, and a seriously cool vibe.
Lay of the Land
The easiest way to reach the “Pueblo Magico” of Todos Santos is by car or bus from SJD, Los Cabos Airport. You can also drive from the mainland United States if you want an epic road trip honeymoon. Todos is surrounded by natural beauty with the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains at its back and the Pacific Ocean in the front. It’s a dream for outdoor adventurers. Todos Santos is a very spread-out village. You’ll find it easier if you have a rental car.
What to Do in Todos Santos
Todos Santos is a town teeming with artists. Visit the local galleries! Take a surfing lesson, a yoga class, or a mountain biking tour. Go swimming at Playa Las Palmas. Hang at the beach bar at Playa Los Cerritos. Take an ATV tour with Omega Tours. Stroll the gorgeous historic center. Go whale watching at Playa La Cachora. Fuerteventura is the second-largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, off the coast of Northern Africa. It boasts over 90 miles of pristine beaches and excellent windsurfing (plus other watersports options). The weather is gorgeous year-round!
Lay of the Land
There are direct flights and ferries to Fuerteventura from Europe and Northern Africa. With three miles of pink sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, endless tidepools, and warm shallow waters, Sotavento Beach is a must! Dive into some Norman history in the oldest settlement on the island, Betancuria. Enjoy panoramic views from the top of El Cardon. Go surfing in El Cotillo.
